Asian Trauma Therapist/Queer Asian Anxiety Therapist in San Francisco, CA

Founder & Therapist at Therapy for Queer Asians

I've spent the past 9 years walking alongside individuals, couples, and families as they navigate healing from trauma, anxiety, identity struggles, and relationship ruptures. My training has centered around systemic, relational, and trauma-informed care, with a strong grounding in justice and liberation-based frameworks. As a queer Korean therapist, I understand the nuances of cultural expectations, silence, and survival — not just academically, but personally. That lived experience fuels my commitment to providing therapy that is identity-affirming, decolonizing, and deeply rooted in curiosity and compassion.

The Therapist Who Goes Deeper When Others Stop

I’m Dr. Wonbin, an Asian trauma therapist who helps LGBTQ+ Asian Americans come home to themselves. My work is grounded in the belief that your pain makes sense — not because something is wrong with you, but because of what you’ve had to carry.

My clients are often the ones who “get it done” — the caregivers, the overthinkers, the perfectionists who’ve mastered how to blend in and make everyone else comfortable. But under that polished surface is often a quiet ache: anxiety, shame, or a deep disconnection from self. If that resonates, I want you to know: you're not alone, and you're not too much.

In therapy, I blend Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Narrative-informed approaches to help you reconnect with the parts of yourself that have been exiled, hidden, or silenced. Together, we’ll get curious about your inner world — not to judge it, but to understand how your inner parts have protected you, and what they need to finally feel safe enough to rest.

We’ll also explore how systems like racism, family expectations, and cultural silence have shaped your story — and how to reclaim that story in your own voice.

I believe therapy is a space where you don’t have to explain your existence. It’s a space where your full self — messy, tender, brilliant — is welcome.

Anxiety Therapy

Anxiety doesn’t always look like panic attacks. Sometimes, it’s the constant overthinking. The racing thoughts at night. The perfectionism that keeps you hustling. The knot in your stomach when you disappoint someone. The fear that you’re too much — or not enough. For many LGBTQ+ Asian Americans, anxiety is woven into the fabric of survival: navigating family expectations, cultural silence, racial microaggressions, and the pressure to hold it all together.

In therapy, we untangle the layers — gently, at your pace. We listen to the anxious parts of you not as enemies to silence, but as protectors that have been working overtime. Through Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Narrative Therapy, we make space for your full self: the part that’s exhausted, the part that’s scared, and the part that’s still hoping.

You don’t have to carry it all alone anymore. Let’s slow down together and find the calm beneath the noise.

ADHD Evaluation & ADHD Coaching

Maybe you’ve always felt a little off. You try so hard to stay focused, to stay organized, to do the thing — but somehow it always ends in overwhelm, procrastination, or burnout. Or maybe you’ve been told you’re “too sensitive,” “not trying hard enough,” or “just anxious.” What if the real story is that your brain just works differently?

For many queer, neurodivergent, and Asian American folks, ADHD often hides behind layers of perfectionism, masking, and internalized shame. You’ve figured out how to pass — but it’s come at a cost.

I offer ADHD evaluations using QB testing — an FDA-cleared, performance-based tool that goes beyond checklists to measure attention, impulsivity, and activity levels. It’s objective, affirming, and can help you get clarity in a world that often gaslights your lived experience.

If diagnosed, I also offer ADHD-informed coaching tailored to your unique brain. Together, we’ll find systems that work for you (not just ones that look good on paper), build self-trust, and unlearn the toxic productivity narratives that keep you stuck in shame.

Your brain isn’t broken — it’s brilliant. Let’s get curious about what it needs to thrive.

Rejection Sensitivity & Relational Trauma Therapy

If you’re reading this, you might know what it feels like to brace yourself for the next hurt — the unspoken criticism, the family silence, the micro-rejection that leaves you doubting your worth. Rejection sensitivity isn’t just being “too sensitive” — it’s the nervous system’s way of trying to protect you after years of relational wounds, cultural erasure, and sometimes outright dismissal.

For many LGBTQ+ Asian Americans, rejection doesn’t just come from strangers — it often comes from those closest to us. Families, communities, even ourselves. These relational traumas leave invisible scars that shape how you connect, trust, and love.

In therapy, we create a space to safely explore these wounds and the parts of you that have been hurt, hidden, or hypervigilant. Using Internal Family Systems and narrative-informed approaches, we help you untangle old patterns of fear and shame, reclaim your story, and learn how to build relationships — with others and yourself — that feel safe, authentic, and nourishing.

Healing relational trauma isn’t about forgetting what happened. It’s about learning how to carry it differently, with more compassion and less pain.

Gender and Sexual Identity Exploration Therapy

Exploring your gender or sexual orientation can feel like stepping into uncharted territory — exciting, confusing, and sometimes deeply lonely. Especially when cultural expectations, family pressures, or internalized shame whisper that your true self isn’t safe to show.

If you’ve ever felt torn between who you are and who you’re “supposed” to be, you’re not alone. For many LGBTQ+ Asian Americans, identity exploration is complicated by intergenerational trauma, silence, and the weight of wanting to belong.

In therapy, I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental space where you can safely explore, question, and celebrate your identity — on your own terms. Together, we’ll navigate the complexities of cultural and familial expectations, unpack internalized stigma, and build a grounded sense of self that feels authentic and whole.

This work is about more than labels. It’s about discovering the freedom to live your truth — boldly, gently, and unapologetically.

Intergenerational Trauma & Family of Origin Therapy

The wounds of the past often live long after the stories stop being told. Intergenerational trauma — the pain passed down through family lines — shapes how we relate to ourselves and those closest to us. For many Asian Americans, this trauma is wrapped in silence, sacrifice, and unspoken expectations, making it hard to even name what’s been inherited.

Family of origin issues are often the hardest to untangle because they’re bound by love, duty, and history. You might carry patterns of disconnection, shame, or code-switching that keep you stuck in cycles you don’t want to repeat — but you also carry hope for something different.

In therapy, we’ll gently explore how these inherited wounds live in your body, mind, and relationships. Using Internal Family Systems and narrative-informed approaches, we’ll work to understand the protective roles of these old pains, heal the parts of you that have been silenced, and rewrite the family story in ways that honor your truth.

Healing intergenerational trauma isn’t about erasing the past — it’s about transforming how it lives in you, so you can build freedom and connection on your own terms.

Religious Trauma & Faith and Spirituality Therapy

For many of us, faith and spirituality are sources of comfort, community, and meaning. But what happens when the very beliefs meant to nurture us become sources of pain, shame, or rejection? Religious trauma runs deep — especially for LGBTQ+ Asian Americans navigating cultures where faith and family are tightly intertwined.

You might carry the weight of messages that tell you your true self is wrong, or the fear of being cast out by the people you love most. This kind of spiritual pain can leave you feeling fractured, isolated, or disconnected from your sense of purpose.

In therapy, I provide a safe, non-judgmental space to explore your unique spiritual journey. Together, we’ll unpack harmful teachings and find ways to reclaim faith or spirituality that affirm your identity, honor your experiences, and nourish your soul.

Healing religious trauma is about finding your own path to meaning — one that embraces complexity, truth, and self-compassion.

Queer Couples Therapy

Queer love often means loving in a world that wasn’t built for you. For LGBTQ+ Asian American couples, relationship challenges can include not only everyday ups and downs but also the pressures of cultural expectations, family silence, and navigating identity together.

In therapy, I create a space where you and your partner can explore your connection honestly and safely — without fear of judgment or erasure. Whether you’re facing communication challenges, navigating cultural differences, healing from past trauma, or just wanting to deepen your bond, therapy can help you build a relationship rooted in trust, authenticity, and resilience.

Together, we’ll untangle old patterns, cultivate new ways of relating, and strengthen the foundation for love that honors both your individual selves and your shared journey.
